Lucas "The Machine" Matthysse Returns

The last time Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse stepped into the ring he was a 3-1 favorite to beat unbeaten champion Danny Garcia on the Co-Main event to one of the biggest cards in the history of boxing. The hype around Lucas Matthysse was so real that winning that fight would have realistically lined him up at a shot with pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather who was the main event on the card. In fact, if Matthysse had won the Garcia fight it would likely be him facing Floyd Mayweather on May 3rd and not fellow Argentinian and friend Marcos Maidana.

Just like some fighter’s always find a way to win, especially in big fights, some fighter’s always find a way to lose. Unlike his last opponent Danny Garcia who has found a way to win every big fight he’s ever been in, Matthysse always seems to find a way to lose them. Garcia has won some fights in his career that he should have lost but the judges favored him. The exact opposite applies to Lucas Matthysse. Matthysse has lost some fights in his career that he should have won but the judges did not favor him. So when Danny Garcia and Lucas Matthysse fought seven months ago on the Mayweather-Canelo undercard, ironically enough, even though Matthysse was dominating the first part of the fight, he found his eye shut on a light jab thrown by Garcia that changed the last six rounds of the fight and the outcome. Garcia had found a way to win, and Matthysse had found a way to lose.  

All is not lost for the hard hitting fighter from Argentina. Three years ago Marcos Maidana suffered a lopsided decision to Devon Alexander. There was no way that anyone would have ever predicted that he would ever land a shot with Mayweather after that embarrassing loss. But when a fighter is born with a good chin, and powerful punches, there is always a chance that a hot streak can be put together to land that fighter with another huge opportunity. That is what Marcos Maidana did, and that is was Lucas Matthysse will look to do this Saturday night when he faces John Molina on the undercard of the Thurman-Diaz fight at the StubHub Center in Carson, Ca on Showtime.

If there is one thing that you can’t deny about Matthysse it’s that he has raw power. He doesn’t have combination power, but raw power. He’s a guy that with one punch, right from the opening bell, can end the night quickly. Starting Saturday night Matthysse will look to do what his fellow countryman Marcos Maidana did three years ago. He will look to put together a streak of impressive wins, hopefully knockouts, and once again line up a big fight down the road. The power puncher brings in a record of 34-3 with 32 wins coming by way of knockout. In a combined 37 fights Lucas Matthysse has only had two fights where his opponent has not hit the canvas. When you bring that sort of power every time you step into the ring anything can happen. That’s what the fans love about him. Every punch is thrown with bad intentions. Every punch can be the knockout punch. For Matthysse it’s about getting to the big fight again, and getting over the hump of bad luck that seems to haunt him every time he lands a shot against a big named opponent. The streak to redemption starts this Saturday night.
