Stiverne KO's Arreola for WBC heavyweight championship

Bermane Stiverne (24-1-1, 21 KO's) became the WBC heavyweight champion of the world by knocking out Chris Arreola (36-4, 31 KO's) in the sixth round of their scheduled twelve round bout at the USC Galen Center in Los Angeles, California. Stiverne became the first heavyweight champion of Haitian decent in the history of the sport. Arreola was controlling the pace of the fight, battering Stiverne on the ropes and landing the bigger shots up until round five. In round six, Stiverne managed to land a huge right hand at the top of the head of Arreola that sent him to the canvas. Arreola never recovered, and two knockdowns later the referee stopped the fight.

The fight was broadcasted by ESPN in a Saturday night special. ESPN has been looking to invest in the heavyweight division. Two weeks ago they purchased the rights to show the Klitchsko fight. While the rating for that brought in disappointing numbers they are hoping that the Stiverne-Arreola fight does better. Stiverne is mandated to face US heavyweight phenom Deontay Wilder (31-0, 31 KO's) next. ESPN has shown interest in broadcasting the fight but it will depend on how the ratings went for tonight's bout.
