Undefeated pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather still showed that he is the best selling fighter in the sport today. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the Mayweather-Maidana fight did way less than what Showtime and Floyd would have wanted when it comes to selling PPV buys.
The Mayweather-Maidana fight did around 900k buys or less according to various sources in the industry. Showtime and Golden Boy have yet to release an official number and likely won’t for awhile, if they ever do. Last year it took them six days to release the conflicting reports of the Guerrero fight, and five days to release the numbers for the Canelo fight. In case anyone was wondering it’s been twenty-six days with no official report from Showtime or Golden Boy.
The 900k number wouldn't be so bad if Floyd wasn’t guaranteed $32 million dollars. While no factual evidence is presented as to how the network and Golden Boy make money on these huge PPV events there are some very good sources in the industry that say that 900k buys or less would mean a loss for Showtime and or Golden Boy. Also, Mayweather would get hardly any extra money form the PPV buys. Certainly not $70 million he was expecting. In fact, it’s likely he won’t make any more than the $32 million that he was guaranteed, which is still a very good amount of money for the pound for pound king.
