Two-weight world champion Mikaela Mayer (20-2, 5 KOs) is set to defend her WBO welterweight title in a highly anticipated rematch against former champion Sandy Ryan (7-2-1, 3 KOs) this Saturday, March 29, at the BleauLive Theater at Fontainebleau Las Vegas. Their first meeting ended in controversy, with Mayer edging Ryan via split decision last September, setting the stage for an immediate rematch.
Mayer Confident in Her Strength at Welterweight
“I feel better than ever,” Mayer said at Thursday’s press conference. “I’m stronger and healthy at welterweight. If I hurt her last time, I’m going to hurt her ten times more this time around.”
Ryan Determined to Reclaim the Belt
“I appreciate Mikaela giving me the rematch,” Ryan stated. “It’s what the fans wanted, and I’m taking that belt back on Saturday.”
Co-Main Event: Norman Defends WBO Welterweight Title
Unbeaten WBO welterweight world champion Brian Norman Jr. (26-0, 20 KOs) makes his first title defense against Puerto Rican contender Derrieck Cuevas (27-1-1, 19 KOs).
Norman Jr. is aware of the pressure that comes with holding a world title. “You’re not a real champion until you defend your belt,” he said. Cuevas, however, sees an opening. “He’s got to look good because he didn’t win the belt by fighting a champion,” he noted. “I hit hard, and I’m stronger than him.”
