Last weekend’s HBO telecast featuring the return of Brandon Rios who defeated Diego Chaves by disqualification, and “The Bone Crusher” Sergey Kovalev who dismantled Blake Caparello in just two rounds, drew in between 900k to 1 million viewers.
The Rios-Chaves fight averaged at 934k viewers while the Kovalev-Caparello fight brought in around 990k viewers. The numbers are less than average for a normal HBO telecast that usually brings in anywhere from 1.1 to 1.4 million viewers on any given Saturday. Last week the Golovkin-Geale fight averaged just short of a million as well.
The summer months haven’t always done great numbers which could be the reason why the numbers are a tad lower than the average. Also, while the Rios-Chaves fight was supposed expected to be a great fight, many felt that Kovalev and Golovkin were in mismatches and therefore could have turned some fans away. As it stands, Mexican stars Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Juan Manuel Marquez are the biggest draws this year on any television network.
