Miguel Cotto talks career, Kamegai, retirement

In the shadows of the Mayweather-McGregor extravaganza, former world champion Miguel Cotto will be taking the stage Saturday night for the first time since losing to Canelo nearly two years ago. Cotto’s opponent will be Yoshihiro Kamegai. The fight will take place on HBO live from the StubHub Center. Cotto is ready and prepared, as 2017 will be the last time he spends his time inside of the squared circle. On a conference call yesterday he took some time to answer some questions.

“I enjoyed my whole career. I believe that if anything from the beginning didn't happen in my career, I wouldn't have the career that I've had. You know, I've enjoyed my whole career, and I don't want to point to any opponent, to any fight. I think that my whole career has been great for world boxing.”

When Cotto was asked how they were preparing for Kamegai, he referred to his typical Miguel Cotto answer.

“I've been here doing whatever Freddie wants me to do. Just preparing for the fight plan for Kamegai on the 26th, and that's all I've been doing here, you know? I've been doing the best of me, bringing the best of me every day, and that's all I can say.”

Cotto wouldn’t elaborate on who would be next, or what they would be planning. Being a professional as usual he refused to look passed Kamegai. One point he did make was that after December 31st his Hall of Fame boxing career would be over.

“No. The decision is already made. I'm leaving on December 31st, no matter what happens with my career.”
