Katie Taylor becomes world champion in just her seventh professional fight with points victory over Anahi Sanchez

Katie Taylor won her first world title on Saturday in just her seventh professional bout with a dominating performance unanimous decision victory over Anahi Sanchez.

Sanchez (17-3, 9 KO’s), 26, lost her WBA lightweight title on the scales on Friday when she weighed-in a pound overweight. Although Sanchez was given a second opportunity, she failed to make weight again and was stripped of the belt.

Taylor (7-0, 4 KO’s), 31, of Ireland, a 2012 London Olympic gold medalist, dropped Sanchez in the second round with a beautiful left to the liver, and nearly stopped her.

“This was by far the biggest night of my career,” said Taylor. “Thank God for another great victory. This was a very, very tough fight. I’m just delighted to be crowned world champion.”

Sanchez (17-3, 9 KO’s), 26, of Argentina, who was set to make the first defense of the title she won by stopping Cecilia Sofia Mena in September, was repeatedly rocked by rights and combinations throughout the fight, as the extra weight did not turn the tables in her favor.
