Demetrius Andrade calls out Gennady Golovkin: It's time to make the fight!

When it comes to pure boxing talent, skills, and marketability, Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade has it all. What he lacks, though, is a signature bout that will put him over.

Andrade (25-0, 16 KO’s), 29, of Providence, Rhode Island, is coming off a one-sided decision victory over Alantez Fox in October.

Andrade has made some poor decisions in terms of managing his career. He was stripped of his WBO 154-pound world title in 2015 after he was inactive for 16 months. But he appears to have learned from his mistakes and has the opportunity of a lifetime with HBO to line up major fights he has desperately sought.

With the recent news that negotiations for the potential rematch between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin are on hold until the conclusion of the WBO title fight between Billy Joe Saunders and David Lemieux in December, Andrade wasted no time calling out the champion.

“There’s no better time [to make this fight with Golovkin],” Andrade told FightNights.com. “Of course, they [Team Golovkin] have to look at the risk factor on their end, but also the war factor when fighting somebody like Demetrius Andrade.

“From my standpoint, this will catapult right up to where I need to be – and that’s a superstar, a megastar, and only a few people can get me there in that position, and he’s one of them.”

Both fighters were standout amateurs. Andrade represented the United States in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and won the U.S. national championships and Golden Gloves twice each. Meanwhile, Golovkin collected a silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, and also earned gold medals at the 2003 World Championships, the 2002 Asian Games, and the 2004 Asian Championships.

Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KO’s), 35, a Kazakhstan native based in Los Angeles, is coming off a controversial split draw to Canelo in September at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, in a bout that most ringside observers thought he won. FightNights.com scored the bout 116-112 for Golovkin.

Golovkin has also knocked out 23 of his last 25 opponents but has gone two fights consecutively without a KO. He also beat former titlist Daniel Jacobs by unanimous decision in a competitive affair in March.

Andrade sports a two-and-a-half-inch height advantage [6’1” to 5’10½”] and a three-and-a-half-inch reach advantage [73½” to 70”] over Golovkin. However, he also been down in his career, most notably in a 2013 world title fight against Vanes Martirosyan. When asked if K2 Promotions, who represents Golovkin, would be a little concerned about the disadvantage, Andrade touted his resume.

“I had no problems fighting a guy like Willie Nelson that was 6’4” and a guy like Alantez Fox at 6’5”,” he added. “If there’s a fight, and we’re all at the same weight class, why is that an issue?”

Golovkin likely walked away with more fans following the Canelo bout, and that would make an Andrade fight a better sell.
