Heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder sentenced in marijuana case

A municipal court judge sentenced heavyweight world titleholder Deontay Wilder to 60 hours of community service for misdemeanor marijuana possession.

Judge Ricky McKinney found Wilder, 32, guilty Thursday, and ordered him to perform the community service at a local Young Men's Christian Association facility, commonly known as the YMCA. Wilder received a 30-day suspended sentence and two years of probation.

Wilder was arrested in his hometown of Tuscaloosa in June after police found marijuana in his Cadillac Escalade. He was initially stopped for a window tint violation.

Officers searched the vehicle after detecting the odor of marijuana and found an undisclosed amount in the car's console.

Paul Patterson, Wilder's attorney, has said the marijuana didn't belong to his client. Patterson claimed the undefeated boxer had just returned from a trip to Georgia in his Rolls Royce before switching to his Cadillac Escalade, which he had allowed his friends to use, to run some errands.

Wilder, a 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, is 39-0 with 38 knockouts.
