This light heavyweight fight in August is not just nerve-wracking for the supporters but the fighters too. Marcus Browne is on the run for a title fight and for Jean Pascal, former WBC light heavyweight titleholder (2009-2011), this is a chance to turn his career back on track and win the WBA light heavyweight belt. However, some concerns are being expressed at Pascal’s ability to fight a top-level fighter like Browne.
While Haitian born Canadian boxer Jean Pascal's boxing record of 33 wins, 6 losses and 20 KOs showed an impressive start to his career, at 36 he has struggled over his last few fights. Ranked WBA 15th to Browne's 4th is this Pascal’s chance to turn that ticking clock around?
Pascal, nicknamed the 'Executioner' has represented Canada since his amateur days on the Canadian National Boxing Team when he won several gold medals, as well as representing Canada at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Pascal was Canadian amateur champion seven times from 1998-2004 and named best Canadian boxer 2001-03.
Pascal's last five years in the ring have seen some high profile losses, two against Sergey Kovalev and decisions against Bivol and Eleider Alvarez, that have overshadowed his wins. Bivol did not come close to a knockout or knockdown in his fight, indicative that this fighter still gives his all. While not ranked in the top ten he has shown the capability to beat Lucien Bute, the then-undefeated Yunieski Gonzalez and Ahmed Elbiali.
Has he still got what it takes to defeat another unbeaten fighter? He does seem to be able to pull rabbits out of the hat, so the result is not set in stone as some pundits are declaring.
Marcus Browne (23-0, 16 KOs) is a 28-year-old southpaw out of Staten Island New York. Nicknamed 'Sir' he is at his fittest, an athletic boxer that has grown in maturity and possesses speed, stamina, balance and punching power. A lethal combination when added to his ring knowledge and highly toned instincts.
His undisputed 12 round victory in January against former 2nd division champion Badou Jack, scoring 117-110, 116-111 and 119-108, gave him the WBA interim light heavyweight belt plus World Boxing Council Silver 175 lb title.
A member of the 2012 US Olympic Boxing team, Browne is looking for a title fight against some big hitters like WBC champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk, or WBA champion Dimitry Bivol, who beat Pascal on a lopsided 12 round decision.
The only concern about this fighter is the domestic violence charges that have occurred once again, from which he is now on bail. In 2018, his arrest on similar charges had him pulled from his title fight with WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev, scheduled for June 2018. His court appearance for this incident is scheduled for after August 3rd.
The question is, how will this affect his psychological approach to the fight?
