Fury comes into the contest on the back of a victory over former WBC champion Deontay Wilder. Fury defeated Wilder thanks to an eleventh-round knockout in a fight that was named The Ring magazine Fight of the Year for 2021. In contrast, Whyte was scheduled to face Otto Wallin in defence of his WBC interim title just a few weeks after Fury beat Wilder but was forced to withdraw due to a shoulder injury. The fight was not rescheduled, and Whyte decided to move straight on to the match against Fury.
