Caleb Plant believes he can KO David Benavidez

Caleb Plant is aiming for another KO of the Year.

After losing to Canelo Alvarez via 11th-round stoppage in November 2021, many had written Plant (22-1, 13 KOs) off. Instead, the 30-year-old opted to change trainers, replacing Justin Gamber with well-respected veteran trainer, Stephen "Breadman" Edwards.

The new pairing got off to an explosive start as Plant knocked arch-rival Anthony Dirrell out cold in the ninth round in the chief support to the Deontay Wilder-Robert Helenius October 15 Fox Sports Pay-Per-View main event.

His first professional loss followed by his most significant victory, Plant will ride that confidence--reportedly--against his biggest rival, David Benavidez in the first part of 2023. As he prepares to put himself back in title contention, the former IBF super middleweight titleholder credits his new trainer as well as his close bond with his father, Richie, for the quick turnaround.

“Me and my dad, Breadman - we're working on a lot of things,” Plant told Fight Hub TV. “Breadman has been a great addition to the team, great chemistry. He’s definitely adding his own spice and flavor to it and it’s going well.”

Although the betting lines slightly favor the unbeaten Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs). Plant remains confident that he will beat the former WBC 168-pound titlist.

Benavidez, like Plant, fought once in 2022, knocking down ex-middleweight champion David Lemieux in the second round en route to a third-round TKO. While the 26-year-old has yet to taste defeat as a pro, he has been on the floor. Ronald Gavril floored Benavidez in the 12th round of their September 2017 vacant WBC 168-pound title bout in Las Vegas. The judges awarded Benavidez the split decision nod.

“Don't be surprised," said Plant when asked if he can KO Benavidez. "If Ronald Gavril could drop him, then...you know.”

Benavidez and Gavril fought in an immediate rematch seven months later, but this time Benavidez left no doubt, dominating Gavril in a lopsided unanimous decision rout.
