Tyson-Paul: Is Netflix Doubling Down on Live Sports Streams?

It seems that lately, Netflix is showing a huge interest in live sports streams. They are taking a big step forward by streaming the fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, which is set to happen in July. They have also made other bold moves, including streaming two NFL games on Christmas Day. Netflix management has come forward to say that having live programming helps the company to create cultural moments that could help to pave the way for a new revenue stream.

Netflix is Streaming the Tyson-Paul Match

Netflix is billing the event as being one of the biggest ever to be held on the platform, and they have also said that they want to differentiate their position within the market. Netflix isn’t just venturing into live sports either, in fact, they have worked to create their own gaming platform too.

Although you won’t find the same games that you would at an online Ontario casino, such as slots, live blackjack and roulette, you will find a range of exclusive titles. Although the range that Netflix offers is small compared, they are trying to get the edge by working on unique titles that draw in niche audiences.

The same concept applies to their live sports streams. They want to cater to specific niche audiences by streaming sports that have solid followings while ensuring that they don’t stretch themselves too thin. They have hedged their bets in live sports by signing a $5 billion licensing deal with WWE, and when you combine this with the NFL and the latest boxing matches they are hosting, it’s not hard to see that the company is keen to expand their live sports programming.

Growing Engagement and Profit

Netflix has the overall aim of trying to grow engagement as well as revenue and profit. Live sports, especially boxing, are proving to be the best way to do that. Hyped matches, such as Tyson-Paul are a great way for the streaming giant to penetrate the market. The match is being hosted on the platform for free, meaning that anyone with a Netflix subscription can watch.

It doesn’t matter which package you have either. You could have the smallest package possible with the streaming service and still access the match. The only difference is that you may not be able to watch it in 4K quality, as your stream quality will be reduced if you don’t have the higher package. Netflix could even have an edge over their streaming competition too, as the company has a huge content repository already. This means that they can retain viewers who might have originally signed up to watch the Jake Paul and Mike Tyson match.

Netflix has a great deal of knowledge regarding niche audiences too, and they can use this to try and strengthen their targeted advertisements. Even though their ad-tier growth as a whole has been slow, people are excited about the long-term potential of the platform, and as of January 2024, their ad-tier had 40 million monthly users.

Their growth is unprecedented right now, and for the company, the future is bright in regards to live sports streaming.
