No Limits Boxing announced yesterday that former super welterweight champion Tim Tszyu will step back into the ring on September 22nd for an IBF eliminator bout. Shortly after this announcement, the sanctioning body formally ordered Tszyu to face Erickson Lubin.
Tim Tszyu (24-1, 17 KO) recently accepted a short-notice fight against Sebastian Fundora in March after Keith Thurman withdrew due to injury. However, the decision proved costly when an accidental elbow in the second round caused a severe cut, leaving Tszyu struggling through the fight and ultimately losing by split decision. This setback also forced him out of a lucrative August showdown with Vergil Ortiz Jr. Determined to get back on track, Tszyu aims to secure both this eliminator and a subsequent shot at Bakhram Murtazaliev within the next five months.
George Rose, CEO of No Limits, stated that Erickson Lubin (26-2, 18 KO), who previously withdrew from negotiations for a potential title fight with Tszyu in January, "still needs convincing to travel to Australia." Lubin, known as "The Hammer," hasn't fought since a contentious decision win over Jesus Ramos last September, which was his second fight following a severe defeat to Fundora.
Lubin is currently ranked No. 3 by the IBF, while Tszyu sits at No. 4, with the No. 1 and No. 2 spots vacant. Should Lubin decline the fight, other contenders like Josh Kelly, Ramos, Xander Zayas, Callum Walsh, and Slawa Sporner are next in line.
