Caleb Plant was set to face Trevor McCumby on August 17 in Orlando, Florida, but the bout has been postponed after McCumby sustained a cut over his right eye, according to sources close to ESPN.
The WBA interim super middleweight title fight, which was to be PBC's first non-PPV Prime Video headliner, will be rescheduled, sources confirmed. Consequently, the entire PBC event at the Caribe Royale Resort has been postponed.
Although the fight was never formally announced, Plant had posted on social media last week about the August 17 date, sharing no additional details.
Plant, a former super middleweight titleholder, has not fought since a decision loss to David Benavidez in March 2023. With a record of 22-2 and 13 KOs, Plant made three successful title defenses before being knocked out by Canelo Alvarez in an undisputed super middleweight championship fight in November 2021.
The 32-year-old fighter from Las Vegas was previously ranked as ESPN's No. 5 super middleweight but was removed due to inactivity.
Trevor McCumby, holding a record of 28-0 with 21 KOs, is a 31-year-old boxer from Glendale, Arizona, who has never challenged for a world title. McCumby’s last fight was earlier this year when he won a ten-round decision against Christopher Pearson.
Fan reaction to this fight had been lukewarm following Plant's social media announcement, so the postponement might not stir significant disappointment. However, this extended period of inactivity for Plant is far from ideal.
