Super middleweight contender Jaime Munguia and his promoter, Zanfer, have signed a "multi-fight" deal with Top Rank. The first fight under this new agreement will see Munguia face Erik Bazinyan on September 20th.
Munguia (43-1, 34 KOs), a former middleweight champion, failed to achieve two-division glory in May when he was floored for the first time by Canelo Alvarez, ultimately losing by a one-sided decision. Bazinyan (32-0-1, 23 KOs) presents a solid comeback challenge; although he narrowly escaped with a draw against Shakeel Phinn in his last bout, he is no pushover and promises an entertaining matchup.
The real excitement, however, lies in what comes next. Top Rank's in-house super middleweight roster is limited, primarily featuring Christian Mbilli, who is set to face Sergiy Derevyanchenko in the coming weeks. Should both Munguia and Mbilli secure victories, a potential showdown between them could be a serious contender for Fight of the Year.
