Super middleweight Jaime Munguia (43-1, 34 KOs) is set to face unbeaten contender Erik Bazinyan (32-0-1, 23 KOs) in a highly anticipated 12-round main event on Friday, September 20, at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.
Munguia, who suffered his first career loss in May at the hands of fellow Mexican Saul “Canelo” Alvarez at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena, will be making his return to the ring. The bout against Alvarez was for the undisputed super middleweight title, and despite the defeat, Munguia's performance significantly enhanced his reputation.
Following the expiration of his co-promotional agreement with Golden Boy Promotions, Munguia made a surprising move by signing with Top Rank. The 27-year-old fighter, known for his entertaining style, is eager to get back in action. This fight will also mark Munguia’s first since reuniting with Erik Morales, after previously being trained by Freddie Roach.
Erik Bazinyan, 29, born in Armenia and fighting out of Canada, is looking forward to his opportunity on the big stage. “It’s the perfect timing to shock the world. I’ve worked my entire career for this moment, and I know I’ve got everything it takes to beat Jaime Munguia,” Bazinyan said.
Top Rank president Todd duBoef commented, “Erik Bazinyan has been on Jaime’s radar for several years, and Jaime knows he must be at the top of his game.”
Munguia expressed his excitement, saying, “I can’t wait to return to Arizona against an undefeated and motivated Erik Bazinyan. The fight will be shown on the world’s biggest networks. I fight for the fans and look forward to giving them a great show.”
Bazinyan echoed his confidence, “It’s the perfect timing to shock the world. I’ve worked my entire career for this moment, and I know I’ve got everything it takes to beat Jaime Munguia.”
The stage is set for a thrilling showdown between two determined super middleweights, each eager to prove themselves on September 20.
