It appears that Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado haven't had enough of each other just yet. Earlier today a rematch was signed that will send them both into the ring again to square off in what expects to be another fight of the year candidate. Rios stopped Alvarado in round seven of the first fight, however the scorecards were nearly even across the board at the time of the stoppage.
Mike Alvarado and Brandon Rios were awarded the "Fight Of The Year" by Sports Illustrated and many other publications for their first bout on October 13th, 2012. This rematch will be held at the Mandalay Bay Casino and Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 30th, 2013. It will be the main event and broadcasted, once again, by HBO.
We have also been informed by the WBO that they are seriously considering giving their vacant Junior Welter Weight (140) world title to the winner of this match. The reigning WBO champion, Juan Manuel Marquez, had to vacate that belt in order to move up to Welterweight (147) and fight Manny Pacquaio.
If Mike Alvarado wins this fight and is awarded the WBO belt, he will be the first Denver boxer to win a major sanctioned World Championship since Stevie Johnston won the WBC Lightweight title on February 29th, 1999 against Cesar Bazan. Stevie retained that belt until June 17, 2000 when he lost to Jose Luis Castillo.
Alvarado will begin his training camp on Friday, February 1st, 2013 at the Azteca Boxing Club in Bell, California. There is no word yet as to when and where Brandon Rios will start his training camp.
