Earlier today from Macao, China Nonito Donaire (33-2, 21 KO's) became the new WBA featherweight champion as he defeated Simpiwe Vetyeka (26-3, 16 KO's) by a technical decision. Scores were 49-46 across the board in favor of Donaire. Oddly, the fight was stopped by the referee in between rounds four and five due to a cut over Donaire's eye that was caused by a head butt. The problem is that the referee allowed the fight to go two seconds into the fifth round so that the fight could go to the scorecards which is something that shouldn't have been allowed to happen. If the plan was to stop the fight before the fifth round then the fight should have gone to a technical draw which would have resulted in a no-contest. You cannot just start the fifth round because you want the fight to go to the scorecards instead of ending in a no-contest.
Also on the card, Nicholas Walters (24-0, 20 KO's) defeated Vic Darchinyan (39-7-1, 28 KO's) by fifth round KO and the Mexican Russian Evgeny Gradovich(19-0, 9 KO's) defeated Alexander Miskirtchian (24-3-1, 9 KO's) by Unanimous decision.
