Guerrero defeats Kamegai in a Fight of the Year caliber fight

It was one of those fights that many laughed at when it was first signed. The critics were not easy when it came to discussing Guerrero-Kamegai as a Showtime main event. The fans were not interested. Well, everyone was wrong. 

Robert Guerrero, with one eye closed half of the fight, came back after a one year lay off to win a hard fought Fight of the Year candidate fight over Yoshihiro Kamegai Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA. Scores were 117-111, 117-111, and 116-112. The StubHub Center has been no stranger to producing Fight of the Year type fights in recent years. Some say there is just an aura around the place where great fights just happen. Tonight was no different.

Right from the start of the fight Guerrero gained control by boxing around Kamegai landing hard shots to the body and to the head making it seem like it would be an easy night’s work against the tough Kamegai who was defensively flawed from the start. However, two rounds later both fighter’s decided that the boxing part of the night was finished, turning the match into a toe to toe brawl where the best defensive tactic used was to just get hit and fire back. The fight could have been fought in a 3x3 ring. Somewhere in the middle of the fight Guerrero’s eye got closed by a Kamegai combination but it did not stop him from fightings, landing the harder punches, and continuing his toe to toe war. Kamegai hit Guerrero a lot in the fight though it was him that was taking a majority of the hard punches despite never being hurt. The fight is now a Fight of the Year candidate.
