Opening the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on CBS telecast, 21-year old unbeaten super welterweight Erickson Lubin takes on rugged Jorge Cota in a title eliminator. The winner will get first dibs at whomever prevails in the forthcoming showdown between defending titlist Jermell Charlo and mandatory challenger Charles Hatley.
Round 1: Both boxers are cautious in the early going. Cota does a good job of giving Lubin different looks when switching between southpaw and conventional stance, but not letting his hands go to make a difference. Lubin wins the round on activity. Lubin 10-9.
Round 2: Closer round for Cota, who tightens the distance and is able to get off his punches. Lubin lands the occasional straight left hand when pinning Cota along the ropes, but largely boxes behind a high and tight guard. Lubin 10-9 (Lubin 20-18).
Round 3: Lubin comes out far more purposeful, with a flush left hand briefly stunning Cota. The shot set the tone for the balance of the round, as Cota began fighting in reverse while Lubin wisely targeted the body in efforts to slow down his foe and make him a more stationary target. More power shots from Lubin close out his most dominant round of the bout to this point. Lubin 10-9 (30-27).
Round 4: Lubin picks up where he left off in the prior round, taking the fight to Cota who can't keep up with his much younger foe's speed or combination punching. His opponent on the retreat, Lubin attacks and drops Cota with an overhand left. Cota hits the deck hard and is severely unsteady as the referee decides that is enough for the fight.
Official result: Erickson Lubin KO4 (1:25) Jorge Cota
