For the past four years, Michelle "Raging Babe" Rosado has dedicated her time and efforts to honoring the raging babes of boxing through her well-received brunches.
This year's edition takes on a different meaning, as it will also focus on a touchy—and touching—subject near and dear to the event organizer's heart.
The 2017 edition of 'Raging Babes of Boxing' brunch—which will take place on September 16 in Las Vegas hours before the blockbuster middleweight championship showdown between Gennady Golovkin and Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez live from the T-Mobile Arena—will go beyond the scope of shining a spotlight on the hard-working female side of the sport. A portion of the proceeds from the event will also go toward medical cost contribution for the continued recovery of former rising welterweight contender Prichard Colon.
The charismatic young boxer from Puerto Rico fell into a coma from injuries sustained in his foul-filled NBC-televised clash with Terrel Williams in Oct. '15. Day by day, he fought the fight of his life in making progress, awakening from his coma and now on the long road to recovery. Recent videos of his inspirational progress have surfaced, along with updates from those in the boxing community who've paid respects to their pugilistic peer.
While Colon perseveres, his family is left to pick up the hefty tab that comes with round-the-clock medical care. Physical reminders of the life they've led have long been sold to help offset the increasing costs, yet that still isn't close to being enough for the long haul.
This is where the boxing community must come. With that comes the first step in providing the avenue for others to follow and assist.
"Prichard has made some great strides in his recovery, but the fact remains that the therapy he needs, the medical expenses, the support that his family needs, doesn't end," notes Rosado, who along with Livvy Cunningham—wife and manager of former cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham—formed the "Pray 4 Prichard" Facebook group in 2015. "His family has sacrificed everything to help him get better, and he sacrificed everything to entertain us in the ring."
A percentage of the proceeds from this year's brunch—named 'Shine Bright'—will benefit the Prichard Colon Foundation, which funds the hefty monthly insurance premiums that are essential to Colon's recovery.
The 2017 recipient of the Luminary Award will be named in the coming days.
"I can't wait to share our honoree's story," said Rosado.
Undoubtedly the story will be shared among the event's largest crowd yet. Each edition has grown over the past four years, with more than 50 raging babes attending the New York-based brunch lash June—aptly named 'New York, New York'—to honor longtime boxing promoter Kathy Duva.
"This event has grown to be so much more than a bunch of women sharing a meal. Experiences, talents and stories of heartbreak and triumph are shared at these events. They have come to mean a lot to the women working tirelessly to advance this sport of ours."
