Francisco C De Vaca passed his stiffest test yet with a unanimous decision victory over Victor Proa on Saturday at Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix.
In just his second fight at featherweight C De Vaca, 22, faced Proa, 32, who was knocked out inside six rounds by former super bantamweight title contender Luis Emanuel Cusolito in July.
C De Vaca won on scores of 99-91, 100-90, and 97-93. FightNights.com scored the bout 97-93.
The first round was mostly tentative as both fighters threw jabs to the head and short shots to the body. However, towards the conclusion of the round, C De Vaca connected on two hard right hands and a combination, as Diaz had his back against the ropes.
The succeeding two rounds were slow and dull, but the action picked up in the fourth. Diaz had success with a sustained body attack and a series of right hands. Meanwhile, C De Vaca connected on approximately seven low blows. He was eventually warned by referee Wes Melton. However, C De Vaca went on to land about five more before the night was over.
In the fifth round, the round started chanting “Panchito, Panchito,” as C De Vaca and Diaz kicked off the frame trading body shots, jabs, and counter punches in what was the most exciting round of the night. It appeared, though, that Diaz was more effective with his counter left hook.
Diaz had his best round in the ninth, landing a series of lefts, an overhand right, and knocked C De Vaca back into the ropes with a straight right to the body.
With the victory, C De Vaca improves to 17-0 with 5 KO’s, while Proa drops to 28-4-2 with 21 KO’s.
