Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall will meet for a long-awaited rematch this April. There will be no titles on the line although personal pride may pose as a greater stake this time around. The pair first met in 2022 in an undisputed super-lightweight championship fight in which Taylor won via a contentious split decision after 12 rounds.
The narratives surrounding the second fight relate to Taylor looking to prove his previous win was no fluke, with Catterall hoping to prove the opposite.
Going into the April bout, the betting markets and the form of the two boxers over the past couple of years tell a story in terms of how the rematch could go.
Taylor is the favourite to win again
Taylor is a narrow favourite to defeat Catterall in Leeds to extend his record over the Englishman to 2-0. For those betting online, the Scottish fighter is offered at 8/13 to win the fight. However, he will face a tough battle according to Paddy Power News as Catterall will be backed by home support.
The April contest will represent just the second time that Taylor has stepped into the ring since his controversial 2022 win. Despite that, he has much greater experience overall having begun his career back in 2012 and that should help him to get over the line against Catterall again.
The Scotsman also boasts an exceptional knockout rate of 68% which suggests he could silence the doubters this time around by forcing an emphatic early stoppage triumph.
Catterall's 13/10 odds to avenge the 2022 defeat show that this one will be far from one-sided although Taylor has a slight advantage due to his height and reach.
Taylor has lost his titles since the first fight
After fighting Catterall in 2022, Taylor was forced to give up his world IBF, WBA, and WBC titles as he refused to agree to a mandatory title defence against Alberto Puello.
In his following fight against Teofimo Lopez in 2023 he put his only remaining belt on the line in the form of the WBO.
Taylor went on to lose his world champion status for the first time in four years against Lopez which means that he can afford no slip-ups against Catterall if he is to earn a title shot again.
Catterall has won back-to-back since the 2022 loss
Catterall has enjoyed a much more successful two-year wait for the rematch between the pair. The Englishman entered two fights in that period and he put up impressive displays in each.
The Chorley-born fighter beat Darragh Foley in Manchester and Jorge Linares in Liverpool both by unanimous decision. He has built up an ideal level of momentum to get revenge against Taylor at last in 2024.
Taylor will ultimately enter as a slight favourite as like the previous fight his height and heavy-hitting should allow him to control the space more efficiently.

Catterall however is still an excellent boxer who has impressed in the ring since his unfortunate defeat. He has come back fighting to build up his reputation again and nobody possesses greater motivation than a man whose legacy has been unfairly tarnished.
Taylor vs Catterall could be the greatest all-British fight of the year as a truly personal battle is set to unfold in West Yorkshire.
