Oleksandr Gvozdyk Expresses Frustration Over Lack of Announcement for Major Fight

Former light heavyweight world champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk is gearing up to square off against the division's emerging star, David Benavidez, for the mandated WBC interim title, even though there hasn't been an official announcement yet.

In an exclusive interview with BoxingScene, Gvozdyk revealed, "It hasn't been formally announced, but it's common knowledge among insiders." Speculating on the delay, he added, "Maybe they're holding off until they announce another fight or something like that. PBC hasn't been big on advertising their shows lately, from what I've seen."

Despite the lack of fanfare, the bout is set to take place in Houston on June 22nd, after initially being slated for June 21st. Benavidez, boasting an impressive record of 28-0 with 24 knockouts, will make his debut in the 175-pound category against the Ukrainian. His recent victories over Caleb Plant and Demetrius Andrade in 2023 have garnered attention, positioning him as a frontrunner for a clash with Canelo Alvarez, potentially after Jaime Munguia on May 4.

Gvozdyk, however, remains unfazed by the Canelo chatter. "I couldn't care less," he shrugged. "It doesn't change anything for me. It doesn't affect the fight's status, my opponent, or my purse. Maybe it tweaks my ego a bit, but I'm alright with that. All I want is a shot at the title. All the media buzz and hype, it's irrelevant to me. Just line me up for a title fight, that's all I'm after."
