Lamont Roach Confident Ahead of Lightweight Title Shot Against Gervonta “Tank” Davis

WBA Super Featherweight World Champion and Washington, D.C. native Lamont Roach held a media workout in his hometown Thursday, as he gears up for his March 1 showdown against Gervonta “Tank” Davis at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Roach, who currently holds the WBA Super Featherweight Title, is moving up to lightweight to challenge the undefeated Davis for his WBA Lightweight World Championship, reigniting a D.C. vs. Baltimore rivalry that dates back to their amateur days.

Roach on Moving Up in Weight

“I feel great and I can’t wait. Moving up to 135 pounds makes everything super comfortable. There’s no stress on the weight cut, and I won’t feel drained at all.”

On His History with Davis

“Gervonta has definitely become a world-class fighter since our amateur days. We were both good as kids, but we’ve both evolved a lot. I’m going to prove that I’ve evolved more.”

On His Mentality Entering the Fight

“This is just who I am. I’m not coming in there with a ‘b-side’ mentality. That’s a lot of people’s first mistake against ‘Tank.’ They’ve already fallen short before the fight even starts.”

On His Strategy for Fight Night

“There’s a lot of stuff that I know based on our familiarity with ‘Tank’ that we can use to my advantage.”

“The IQ and skillset that I have, compared to everyone else he’s fought, is just levels above. The tenacity that I’m gonna combine with it is definitely something he’s not used to. I’m bringing the total package.”

On What This Fight Means for His Career

“The hard work I’ve put in shows that I deserve a fight like this. I’ve worked to become one of the best fighters in the world, if not the best fighter in my weight class. And now I have the chance to prove myself against a pound-for-pound talent.”

What’s at Stake?

A win for Roach would not only make him a two-division world champion but also cement him as one of the top lightweights in the world. Meanwhile, Davis looks to continue his dominant reign and undefeated record in front of a packed Brooklyn crowd.

With familiarity, confidence, and a championship mindset, Roach believes he’s ready to shock the boxing world on March 1.
