Super featherweight champion Javier Fortuna retained his title by defeating Carlos Velasquez with a 10th round TKO victory Tuesday night on PBC on Fox Sports One. Velasquez was outmatched and outgunned by Fortuna. Fortuna was able to drop Velasquez in the second round where Fortuna also injured his hand. However even with an injured hand Fortuna proved to be to much for Velasquez.
"I was just waiting to counter punch Velasquez. The rhythm of the fight was important. I was in control of the fight because I could control the rhythm. I've had this style ever since I was an amateur. I've learned more about how to be aggressive and I've always tried to press the action throughout my career." Fortuna stated after the fight.
Fortuna improved to 29-0-1 with 21 KO's. The super featherweight champion finds himself close to a division that features some of the bigger names in the sport like Leo Santa Cruz, Nicholas Walters, Gary Russell Jr, and in his own division number one rated Takashi Uchiyama. Big fights shouldn't be a problem to come by.
