The current IBF World featherweight title champion Lee Selby fighting for the first time in the USA defeated Fernando Montiel by UD over 12 rounds of boxing with scores of 119/109 118/110 116/112. The fight was the co-feature to Devon Alexander vs Aaron Martinez on ESPN.
Selby started out strong controlling the first round establishing the jab. Into the second round Selby inched the round but not by much, Montiel had his moments that made the round very close. Selby continued to use the jab & be the aggressor into the third round. Montiel stood his ground countering and using high high guard to protect the aggression of Selby. Starting the 4th round Selby came out strong landing a hard combination but Montiel had some power punches of his own landing well. Montiel ended the round strong landing some big power shots. Going into the 5th round Montiel had another good round landing the left hook well. Montiel stepped on the gas in the 6th becoming the aggressor and landing hard punches. Selby was cut over the left eye. Montiel proved to the a tough opponent as the fight continued into the championship rounds. Selby using everything in his arsenal winning the rounds as the fight finished. Selby’s countering and hard combos proved to be to much for Montiel even tho Montiel had his moments in the final rounds. Selby was taller, longer and quicker, may have earned a date with Leo Santa Cruz.
