For as long as the WBC, Golden Boy, and K2 promotions put the public on hold for their "negotiations" they outcome was less than exciting. Both Saul Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin will be taking on different opponents the next time they fight. As for an agreement for facing each other...nothing. They have not agreed to anything other than negotiating once again after one of them has fought. The WBC did state that they will strip Canelo if he doesn't fight Golovkin after his next fight. Canelo is expected to return in May while Golovkin is expected to return in February.
The big issue here is that Canelo could end up vacating the middleweight title to avoid the Golovkin fight. That's what is of concern. This all depends on how much Canelo and Golden Boy actually want to fight Golovkin. With nothing taking place in these negotiations one has to believe that there is some type of obstacle in preventing them from agreeing to fight in September.
