A 12-year-old boy has been charged with capital murder in Texas in connection with the shooting death of 24-year-old professional boxer John VanMeter.
According to the Uvalde Police Department, VanMeter and his girlfriend heard a loud noise, as if someone was attempting to break into their home.
VanMeter went to investigate, and his girlfriend phoned 911 upon hearing a gunshot. When officers arrived they found VanMeter lying in the living room with a single gunshot wound to the head.
VanMeter (2-4, 1 KO), who was born in Anaheim, California, was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Witnesses told authorities that a male dressed in all black with a black bandana over his face was seen running from the home where VanMeter was gunned down.
VanMeter had been boxing since he was 10 and professionally since 2015. He won two consecutive bouts before his tragic death.
