On Friday night on EstrellaTV’s Boxeo EstrellaTV, Hafit “Lobo” Talavera (9-0 & 1 KOs) defeated Ernesto Salcedo (14-2, & 11 KO’S) by majority decision, with scores of 96-94, 96-94 and 95-95, in a 10 round super bantamweight fight for the WBC FECARBOX silver title.
The event series occurs the last Friday of each month, and the fights were broadcast from the Yucatán Siglo XXI Convention Center in the city of Mérida, Yucatán.
Salcedo had full control of the first four rounds by using a tricky boxing style which forced Talavera to alternate between his right and left guard.
Talavera added points for his cause but didn’t hurt Salcedo. In the first few rounds, the judges were mixed on the action, with scores of 38-38, 36-40 and 37-39, leaving fans in doubt on who would win.
Although Talavera brought his best, throwing punches from all angles, he failed to connect with Salcedo, who was in better physical condition, ultimately complicating the night for Talavera.
The final round was controlled by Talavera though, who came very close to getting the knockout. The judges surprised fans with their scores, 94-96, 94-96 and 95-95 in favor of Talavera.
The final decision was delayed by several minutes in what seemed like a warning that something strange was happening. The decision took local fans by surprise.
In the co-main event, in Emiliano Toscano vs. Harold "Maravilla" Cervera, the judges scored a draw 58-56, 56-57, 56-58, a controversial outcome because the referee misjudged a Cervera headbutt, and ended up dropping a point to Toscano, an error that could have changed the final score.
