Last year, former WBO super featherweight champion Jamel ‘Semper Fi’ Herring announced his retirement following a loss to lightweight contender Jamaine Ortiz (16-1-1, 8 KOs).
Multiple sources tell FightNights.com that Herring will make a comeback. His team is currently searching for a new promoter. The leading candidate appears to be Lou DiBella. As far as is training situation is concerned, there are two candidates to lead his return, Brian 'Bomac' McIntyre and Kay Koroma.
Herring (23-4, 11 KOs), who lost his WBO junior lightweight title to Shakur Stevenson in October 2021, is coming off back-to-back losses. Herring, a retired Marine, rebounded from from losses in 2016 and 2017 to go on a seven-fight winning streak that culminated in a TKO win over Carl Frampton in March 2021, the third defense of his 130-pound title. He won the belt with a 12-round unanimous decision over Masayuki Ito in May 2019.
