His decision to pursue the 154-pound title comes after initial plans to target the WBO title in the same weight class, where he held the status of ‘Super Champion’ and was entitled to a shot at Sebastian Fundora. However, negotiations were halted due to a medical suspension imposed on Fundora, the newly crowned titlist.

His opponent, Uzbekistan’s Israil Madrimov (10-0-1, 7 KOs), claimed the WBA 154-pound title with an impressive fifth-round knockout of Magomed Kurbanov. Despite being recognized as the WBA 154-pound titlist, Madrimov's status differs from the ‘Regular’ titleholder, as clarified by the sanctioning body’s policy to abolish interim titles in 2021, aiming to streamline the championship landscape within each weight class.
